💧 Tips for Keeping Your Pup Hydrated This Summer

August is HOT, so keeping your dog cool and hydrated is more important than ever. Dogs can quickly overheat during summer walks, playtime, or even just lounging in the sun. Not to mention dehydration can lead to serious health issues. Luckily, it’s easy to prevent with a few simple tips.

Here are our top tips to keep your pup hydrated and happy this summer:

1. 💦 Always Provide Fresh, Cool Water

Sounds simple, but it’s key: make sure your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times, both indoors and out. Make sure you refill bowls often, especially after play time or meals. Keep their bowl in a shaded spot to encourage more drinking during hot days.

Pro tip: Add a few ice cubes to their bowl to keep it cool longer!

2. 🚶 Bring Water for Walks

Whether you're heading to the park, store, or just going on a walk, bring a dog water bottle or travel bowl. Offering your pup water regularly can help prevent overheating.

Essential gear: A collapsible silicone bowl or squeeze bottle is perfect for hydrating your pup on the go.

3. 🌞 Limit Exercise During Peak Heat

To help you and your pup stay comfortable, try to walk in the early morning and later afternoon/night to help avoid that peak heat time. Also keep in mind that if the pavement is too hot it can burn your pups paws and increase their body temperature, making hydration even more critical.

4. 🐶 Know the Signs of Dehydration in Dogs

Watch for these warning signs:

-Dry or sticky gums
-Lethargy or weakness
-Sunken eyes
-Loss of skin elasticity
-Excessive panting

If you notice any of these symptoms, give water immediately and move into a cool, air conditioned space. Please contact your vet if you notice concerning symptoms or are struggling to cool down your pup.

5. 🧊 Try a Doggie Popsicle or Frozen Toy

Make hydration fun! You can create frozen treats using water, pet-safe broth, or plain yogurt with fruit. Pour into silicone molds or a Kong toy and freeze.

Bonus: Not only will these treats help your pup cool down, but they'll give them fun mental stimulation!

6. 🐾 Add Water to Dry Food

If your pup isn’t drinking enough, try mixing a little water into their food. It’s a great way to sneak in more fluids, especially for the more stubborn dogs who don’t like to drink. (Cough cough, Brandi🤣)
